Free Welsh lessons now available for 18 to 25s and teaching staff Young people and education staff in Wales can now access free Welsh lessons as part of a Welsh Government initiative to increase the number of Welsh speakers.

“Exciting new era for education in Wales” as schools embrace new Curriculum The Minister for Education and Welsh Language, Jeremy Miles, recently visited a school to see children learning with the new Curriculum for Wales Video 

NAEL Attainment Champions The Minister for Education and Welsh Language recently announced that as part of the high priority he is placing on tackling the impact of poverty on attainment, he would be looking for Headteachers to participate in a 6 month pilot as Attainment Champions.

NEW DATES – Autumn Term Policy Insights

Dates for this term’s Policy Insights are now live on Hwb.  The first event on 12 October will focus on the launch of the new National Professional Learning Entitlement for all education professionals in Wales.  Two further events in October will focus on the big-ticket themes in Talk Pedagogy and sharing learning from National Professional Enquiry Project (NPEP) to support the wider system.  Registrations are open on Hwb.

Information for everyone developing resources and supporting materials

An initial guide on resources and supporting materials  has been co-constructed and is now publicly available on the resources page on Hwb.  It sets out an agreed criteria and tips on things to consider for anyone planning to develop and share resources aligned to the Curriculum for Wales.

New employment model for supply staff

The Welsh Government’s Programme for Government 2021 outlined a commitment to: ‘develop a sustainable model for supply teachers with fair work at its heart’. Headteachers/data owners can log on and accept the data agreement for the new school year so that teachers can access reports and schedule assessments.

MIS reminder: You will need up-to-date information on your learners in your MIS in order to access reports and schedule personalised assessments. Please ensure your MIS is accurate, and that you run the Hwb provisioning client on a regular basis.

Updated Youth Engagement and Progression Framework

An Overview and Handbook have been published. They focus on reducing NEET numbers, by ensuring more young people progress into education, employment or training when they finish school age education. The Framework has also been expanded to include the prevention of youth homelessness.

Alumni Network Project

Careers Wales have recently been commissioned to support secondary schools in establishing and maintaining alumni communities. More information on this project and how to get involved will be sent to individual schools. Any schools and settings that are keen to establish an alumni community may wish to use the toolkit published by the Welsh Government in 2021.

Note for schools and regional consortia on teaching BSL as an additional language

Deaf organisations in Wales have co-produced the following note for schools and settings that are looking to introduce BSL as part of their curriculum. WJEC: New Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales approved

WJEC is delighted to announce that their new Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales has been approved by Qualifications Wales for first teaching from September 2023. The qualification will be first awarded in summer 2025 and will replace the current Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate.

MIT Global Teaching Labs in Wales January 2023
